Build Your Own Custom Workout

You should customize your workouts according to what best motivates you and helps you achieve your fitness goals. How much exercise and what kind of workout you need differs depending on what your fitness and weight-loss plans are. Here are some principles to help you build a workout that you can stick to.

Design a Workout that Works for You

  • Scheduling: The most important thing is to fit workouts conveniently into your schedule. If you’re typically worn out at the end of the day, you’ll be less motivated to hit the gym. On the other hand, you might find that a post-commute workout is just what you need to unwind. Try a schedule for two weeks and see whether it needs tweaking.
  • Cardio: Cardiovascular exercise is the best way to lose fat and get your metabolism on track for just about any type of exercise you want to try. If you’re not sure where to start building your workout, start by penciling in some running, cycling or a good cardio class.
  • Strength Training: Building muscle is important for fitness, too. Just make sure to space your strength training with adequate rest to allow your muscles time to repair and avoid over-training injuries.
  • Rest: You have to build recovery time into your workout plan. But don’t just flop onto the couch during your off-time. Try several recovery techniques to help your muscles build up quickly and get over your soreness.

Getting Started

It can be hard to know where to start with a new workout plan, especially if you’ve never embarked on one before. But you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Learn how to do your workouts safely and avoid the type of pitfalls that beginners usually encounter when starting a new program by stealing somebody else’s workout. Make things easy on yourself and learn how to run properly. Don’t just jump on a machine at the gym; start with a beginner’s weight training program. If you’re worried about motivation, jump into a dance class or other group workout.

The whole point of designing your own workout is to take the chore out of getting healthy. Make sure you’re doing something you enjoy and set concrete goals for yourself that will help you feel that you are making progress.
